Background of the Study:
Religious education significantly shapes students’ social and cultural outlooks. In Lafia LGA, Nasarawa State, schools incorporate religious education with the objective of promoting tolerance and acceptance of diverse cultural practices. As communities become increasingly heterogeneous due to globalization and internal migration, understanding and accepting different cultural traditions is vital for social cohesion. Religious education, by teaching values such as compassion, understanding, and respect, can serve as a conduit for intercultural harmony (Adams, 2025).

The curriculum in Lafia LGA is designed to expose students to various cultural traditions while emphasizing universal ethical teachings found in many religions. This approach is intended to break down stereotypes and reduce prejudice, thereby fostering a more inclusive society. Research suggests that when students are educated in an environment that values diversity, they are more likely to embrace different cultural practices and develop an open-minded perspective (Smith, 2024).

However, concerns persist regarding the effectiveness of religious education in achieving these inclusive goals. Some critics argue that the curriculum may inadvertently reinforce dominant cultural norms, thereby marginalizing alternative practices. In Lafia LGA, this potential bias raises questions about how effectively religious education encourages true acceptance of cultural diversity. This study aims to assess the extent to which religious education influences students’ attitudes toward different cultural practices. It will examine curricular content, teaching methodologies, and educator roles in promoting intercultural tolerance (Brown, 2023).

Furthermore, the study will consider external factors such as family background, media exposure, and community dynamics that interact with religious education to shape cultural acceptance. Through a comprehensive analysis, the research intends to offer recommendations for refining religious education so that it better supports an inclusive society where diverse cultural practices are respected and valued.

Statement of the Problem:
Despite the inclusive objectives of religious education in Lafia LGA, there is growing concern regarding its effectiveness in fostering acceptance of different cultural practices among students. Although the curriculum promotes tolerance and intercultural dialogue, many students still exhibit resistance or indifference toward cultural practices that differ from their own (Smith, 2024). This gap indicates that the current approach may not fully address the complexities of cultural diversity in an increasingly globalized society.

Compounding this issue is the potential for the curriculum to inadvertently reinforce dominant cultural narratives, marginalizing alternative practices. Additionally, insufficient teacher training on facilitating discussions about cultural diversity may result in superficial coverage of the subject (Adams, 2025). Consequently, students might not develop a deep, practical understanding and acceptance of different cultural traditions. The lack of structured engagement with diverse cultural perspectives further undermines the goal of fostering genuine intercultural tolerance. This study seeks to investigate the contribution of religious education to students’ acceptance of different cultural practices, analyzing curricular and pedagogical strategies and identifying the factors that inhibit cultural acceptance. By addressing these challenges, the research aims to propose actionable recommendations that will strengthen the role of religious education in promoting a more inclusive and tolerant student community (Brown, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate the contribution of religious education to promoting acceptance of different cultural practices among students.

  2. To assess the effectiveness of curricular content and teaching methodologies in fostering intercultural tolerance.

  3. To identify challenges and propose strategies for enhancing the role of religious education in promoting cultural diversity.

Research Questions:

  1. How does religious education influence students' acceptance of different cultural practices?

  2. What elements of the curriculum effectively promote intercultural tolerance?

  3. What challenges hinder the achievement of cultural acceptance in religious education programs?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Religious education significantly enhances students' acceptance of different cultural practices.

  2. Inclusive curricular content positively influences intercultural tolerance.

  3. Inadequate teacher training negatively impacts the effectiveness of religious education in promoting cultural diversity.

Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it examines the role of religious education in promoting acceptance of diverse cultural practices in Lafia LGA. The research provides critical insights for educators, policymakers, and community leaders to refine curricular and pedagogical approaches, thereby fostering a more inclusive and tolerant society. By identifying the strengths and weaknesses of current educational practices, the study offers actionable recommendations to enhance intercultural dialogue and respect among students (Smith, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to assessing the impact of religious education on promoting acceptance of different cultural practices among students in Lafia LGA. It focuses on curricular content, teaching methodologies, and teacher preparedness. The research does not extend to other regions or educational levels, and limitations include potential biases in self-reported attitudes and variations in implementation.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Religious Education: Instruction that imparts religious beliefs, values, and cultural traditions.

  2. Cultural Practices: Customs, traditions, and rituals characteristic of different communities.

  3. Intercultural Tolerance: The acceptance and appreciation of cultural diversity and differences.
